Water release planned for New Bullards Bar Dam and Reservoir, caution advised
People recreating on the lower Yuba River below New Bullards Bar Dam July 17 may experience an increase in river flows as a result of water releases from the reservoir.
At approximately 1 p.m., Yuba County Water Agency personnel will open one of the main spillway gates at the dam to test a new motor and drive system, which was recently replaced to assure reliability of the spillway gate system and further support flood risk reduction.
Approximately 250 cubic feet per second will be released for a duration of about five minutes.
“It’s not a significant amount of water, but it’s also not the time of year we would typically be releasing,” said Mike Kline, Yuba County Water Agency power systems manager. “So, we want to err on the side of caution, ensuring the public is aware that the water level will rise on Tuesday.”
Those on or around the river near New Bullards Bar Dam may see a rise in the river for a few minutes, while those further downstream may experience less of an impact.
Caution signs have been placed at New Bullards Bar Dam and Reservoir and near the water agency’s New Colgate Powerhouse.
